How Totals Are Built

Total Production
Petrinex well volumes for Alberta and Saskatchewan, plus BCER well volumes for British Columbia, plus AER ST39 mine production. Operated volumes, before royalties.
Units
Liquids m³ × 6.2898 = bbl. Gas e³m³ × 35.3147 = Mcf. Gas converts to boe at 6 Mcf per boe. Daily rates divide by days in the month.
Company Grouping
Regulator operator names map to companies through a reviewed alias table. Unmatched operators stay as their own rows.
Asset Types
Facility subtype decides the type: In-Situ is Thermal, Bitumen is Cold Bitumen, Crude Oil and Gas by name. Subtypes that name no product use the reported liquids versus gas mix.
Mines
The ST39 Crude Bitumen production line at the eight mine sites. Upgraders and refineries are left out so bitumen is not counted twice. When ST39 is late, the Statistics Canada Alberta total is split by mine and marked as an estimate.
Plays
A play is the formation each well reports, with suffixes such as Fm and Mbr removed. BarrelTrace groupings combine related formations and list their members. They are labelled as groupings, not regulator plays.
Type Curves and EUR
Type curves are the median (P50) and P10 to P90 range of wells in a group, by month on production, for each product among wells that report it. Decline fits are Arps hyperbolic from the peak with a terminal exponential decline. EURs are BarrelTrace estimates, not reserves.
Well Paths
British Columbia paths come from BCER directional surveys and Saskatchewan paths from IRIS. Alberta publishes no survey, so a straight line joins the surface and bottom hole and is marked approximate. Approximate lateral length is measured depth less true vertical depth.
Completions
British Columbia frac stages, proppant, fluid and pump data come from the BCER hydraulic fracture records. Alberta and Saskatchewan completions are not published as open data.
Land
Alberta petroleum and natural gas agreements and British Columbia petroleum and natural gas titles, from the provincial open data. Areas are gross agreement areas. Only organisation names are kept.
Company-Reported Totals
SEC EDGAR filings, shown beside regulator volumes and never added to them. Company totals are working-interest and can include operations outside Western Canada.
